Stained Glass - Through the Looking Glass

Inspired by the Physic Gardens these beautiful pieces would look lovely in my home. Unbelievably these were designed and created on a One Day Course at the Old Hall Cowbridge. Learners spent the first hour exploring the Physic Garden, taking simple thumbnail sketches or some used their mobile phones to take a photograph. The lines and colours identified from their image were used to inspire their design in which to create their stained glass. The course enabled you to cut the glass safely and accurately, how to grind the edges, apply copper foil and solder together. The tutor Ingrid Walker was so encouraging and provided all the materials needed. All you had to do was remember to wear closed toe shoes and have arms and legs covered. A fantastic day out.

Amazingly this One Day Course cost only £41 Excellent Value! The next Course will be Saturday 7 May 10.30am to 4.30pm at the Old Hall Cowbridge. For more information please visit ValeCourses.org bit.ly/254gM2r

Fused Glass Pendants

I just love what our learners create with Fused Glass. All that cutting glass, having an eye for design, assembling and fusing all on a One Day Course would you believe. Our tutor Frances Lloyd is so inspiring.

Painting with an iPad

Now this has really impressed me today - Painting with an iPad - whatever next!
The learners have been with Sarah Davies on a One Day Course learning to use Brushes App and 'paint' with a stylus pen. Amazing results.

Meet Artist Peter Cronin

Meet our fantastic Artist Peter Cronin, self taught artist living in South Wales and turned professional in 2003 after a twenty-year career in structural engineering.

Peter is an elected member of The Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales and the Pure Watercolour Society. So students can be assured of his credibility in his chosen painting medium.

Peter believes in ‘actively’ teaching so his classes are full of critiques and advice, as well as analysis of established artists techniques and methods. He will demonstrate freely to explain a given method or technique but also believes that this information is there for the student to accept or disregard according to their own tastes and development.

He has developed his own unique teaching style and methods that ensure the classes are entertaining, whilst serious in their pursuit of artistic progress.

Peter is a traditionalist painting in oil and watercolour. When using watercolour Peter paints in the tradition of pure watercolour, using no gouache or acrylic, thus giving the luminosity of the medium full prominence.

We are delighted that Peter teaches his skill for Vale Courses. Peters next course is Thursday 10 March, 10am to 4pm Sketching Outdoors at St Donats Art Centre. One Day Course costs £30. For more information please visit our website bit.ly/1Qno9ui

Ceramic Plates and Egg Cups

Beautiful plates and egg cups designed by Adult Learners on a One Day Courses at the Old Hall Cowbridge. Each learner painted their own design onto a Bisque plate with ceramic underglaze paints. You don't need to be an artist, some used templates. A clear glaze was used to give the plates that lovely looking shine. The egg cups were hand built by the learners and each had their own individual design to coordinate with their plate. The Kiln was fired at 1070 °C for just over 24 hours. The results are just outstanding.

Vale Photographic Club Exhibition at the Old Hall

We are a bunch of friendly and enthusiastic amateur photographers.  Most of us use digital techniques but we love nothing more than when someone comes along and reminds us of the old days of film and smelly darkrooms. We enjoy every aspect of photography, so you're likely to find someone among us who shares a love of your favourite genre.  . Our more experienced members are willing to offer a wealth of help and guidance to novice photographers. We all remember that even experts were beginners once, and to that end assistance and advice are always available. We take our photography very seriously but, above all, we aim to have fun.

We number about 50 and meet on most Friday evenings (Sep - Jun)  at 7.15pm in Ystradowen Village Hall (behind the White Lion Pub).  It's best to use the hall car park (through the gate)  rather than the pub's parking spaces.  The hall has easy wheelchair access.

We aim to arrange a varied and interesting programme to suit all tastes throughout the year.  Presentations from guest speakers and our own members, practical sessions, demonstrations, social outings, photographic trips and a number of  competitions which are open to all members.  The club takes part in 'battles' with other clubs within Wales and the rest of the UK and we hope to give exposure of the work of as many members as possible.  We currently have three exhibitions each year and are always on the lookout for other venues in which to display our members' work.

Why not come along and see if you'd like to join us.  We have a Facebook page where members can post images for comment and for fun.

Vale Ambassadors visit Amelia Trust Farm

Vale Ambassadors visited Amelia Trust Farm. Volunteers Pam and Noel gave us a great guided tour. A wonderful place for families to visit and all they ask is for a £2 donation to park the car. Plenty to see and do to keep the kids entertained. Set in 160acres of countryside, with 28acres of woodland. A variety of farm yard animals, a play area and a special fairy trail. The cafe is not to be missed especially to pick up some fresh eggs.

Digital Marketing at St Donats

Yesterday enjoyed a Digital Marketing Workshop. The tip of the day was show people they could be 'living the dream' with your services/products by enticing photographs. I am not a great photographer but a good tip was aim for the corner of the room not a flat wall, this will give more depth. For my industry, promoting great adult learning courses, a suggestion was to study photographs in Art and Craft Magazines to look at the angle and content. How does the photo entice me into the activity?
Thank you Visit the Vale for organising a great event at St Donat's Arts Centre
